About Me
In its earliest form, Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools (LAB) was a middle school for grades 6 through 8. The Apple, Inc.-related group started its high school wing in 2017 after earning a $10 million grant from Emerson Collective in a national competition. This enables the school to follow students to graduation and awarding degrees.
This cutting-edge school network, commonly known locally as the LAB is located in the center of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle. Together, their scholars make up around 600 students enrolled annually in the two programs, mainly young people of color who hail from low-income families.
The LAB aspires to "prepare scholars with the academic foundation, digital literacy, and leadership skills necessary to succeed in college and professional life as they grow as ethical leaders," as stated in its mission statement. As they continue to serve the community's needs, feedback from students and educators supports this purpose.
Unique Approach to Education in an Urban Community by The LAB
Brooklyn LAB provides various educational opportunities, including sports, extracurricular groups, and technology activities. It was created to satisfy the high demands of urban children. To fulfill the requirements of the pupils, the teachers employ a blended curriculum that combines enrichment programs, conventional academics, and individualized tutoring.
As a result, the Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools (LAB) offer a preferable choice for students currently disadvantaged by their traditional school system and are goal-oriented. By rethinking conventional methods, they treat each student as the unique person they are by empowering them with tailored learning.
The LAB Formula to Help Students Achieve Their Graduation Goal
The Brooklyn LAB school model offers everyone student, even those with special needs, a challenging advanced placement academic program. They provide a student-to-teacher ratio established by the school, together with a range of activities that may satisfy the high expectations of every young person. The LAB formula is made up of three main parts:
Extra Time in School: Longer school days throughout the year let students concentrate on their studies and extracurricular activities like digital media, the visual arts, robotics, and computer coding that aren't typically offered in other schools.
Next Generation study: Brooklyn Laboratory prioritizes study in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math to prepare children for success in college. (STEAM).
High-Dose Tutoring: Participants get individualized small-group or one-on-one tutoring from trained professionals and college graduates for at least two hours each day.
Since most classrooms have two teachers to help children, this method may help challenge students and students doing well. Regardless of their academic achievements or setbacks, kids often feel less stigmatized.
One 7th grader at the LAB stated, "If you're struggling, the teacher can help you." "They'll give you more difficult work if you've been well-known in a subject,"
English language learners' support
New York is well recognized for its openness to immigrants, and Brooklyn students frequently arrive in the country with little to no knowledge of the English language. The Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools (LAB) strongly emphasize supporting English language learners (ELLs), and they do it by using a tiered structure that offers those who require it more intensive intervention and development programming.
This is crucial because most of their employees and pupils are immigrants, representing 80 percent of the school's staff and student body. The school welcomes a teaching and student body among the neighborhood's most varied.
Disability-Affected Students in the LAB
Speaking of diversity, this Brooklyn middle and high school has over one-third of its student body identifying as having a disability. Charter schools can offer more educational services to their attendees with disabilities because they have greater flexibility in how they address kids' needs.
Receiving personalized education catered to their particular, individual requirements gives students with disabilities the opportunity they need to attain their academic goals. The LAB also provides educational opportunities for them, and the staff collaborates with families and parents to ensure that these youngsters' needs are met at home.
High-Intensity Tutoring
Middle school students at Brooklyn Lab participate in tutoring four days a week for 50 minutes, for 200 weekly minutes. However, this time is scheduled into the already-existing academic calendar, and students are placed in tutoring groups according to their requirements and objectives.
Tutors attend weekly classes to support instruction and assess the learning environment. Students obtain marks every week. High-dose tutoring provided through a fellowship program not only meets the requirements of the kids but also promotes teacher retention.
Teachers' stress levels are reduced by knowing they have a support structure, which gives them a second opinion on what certain students might require. Additionally, those who want to become teachers might explore a path by working as tutors.
